Gopi is an orphan who lives with her aunt Urmila Shah, uncle Jeetu Shah, and cousin Rashi in a chawl, having been estranged from her parents at a young age. Urmila and Rashi torment and humiliate Gopi, making her do all the household chores. Urmila keeps Gopi uneducated, viewing her as a burden. Kokila Modi, belonging to an affluent Gujarati family from Rajkot, decides to have her son Ahem Modi marry Gopi, though he is already in a relationship with Anita.
